My mom used to make a lot of our clothes. She died when I was nine. She was really good at it. Those dresses my sister wore never wore out. She out grew them.
She made Afghans, and stuffed animals and pot holders. She made her own purse and many of her clothes.
She baked too.
Mom had a job too. She was a teacher. She had a Masters degree. She had it all.
My grandmother made doilies. Lots of them.
I am sorry we have so few of the things she made left.
If you look at the stuff you buy today you will find the stitching is absolute crap. You see loose threads all over the place. They give you spare buttons because they know the ones the factory sewed on will fall off with usual wear.
Even the more expensive stuff doesn't last.

Mr Sandstorm,
Sir, I'm sure that some women would like to make some of their family's clothes but with their job, taking care of the house and the kids. It leaves them little time for anything else. I know my daughter doesn't when she goes back to work from maturity leave next week she won't get home until 5:30 or 6:00 and when she does get home she has to clean the house, cook dinner, and take care of her four children ages 1 month to 11 years old and her husband. By the time she does all that she's tired and has to go to bed. Maybe her husband should make his family's clothes because he's the one that manages to find the time to play video games. If I had a sewing machine I would love to make things.

nicely, my mom is an total-time operating mom. She works 8-5 as a sales supervisor at a lights agency, making 70,000 a 12 months (she does it very well too. agencies are continually providing her more advantageous funds on the down low to artwork for them extremely.) She has 3 little ones, the oldest is me, at 23, then my sister's in college and my brother is 12. She no longer extremely has to "take care" of my sister or me because she's away in school and that i have my own existence so yea yet she continually made it artwork. and she or he had this residing house for 10 years now and she or he has actually re-finished each and every room. which include water-proofing the basement with me and sister all very last summer season. She taught us a thanks to construct walls with drywall, a thanks to apply the brackets and such. She has a large device room and that i can insulate and paint, and so on. i have used a jackhammer in the previous. I mean, my mom is fantastic. She has been operating on condition that severe college and she or he has her masters and each and every thing. She's very sensible and extremely influenced. i respect her. Oh, and through how, the ladies that i have nicely-known, have stayed in marraiges too lengthy. wondering the adult males are going to regulate. in certain circumstances that's in simple terms over and they "stay at the same time for the little ones" that is the type of undesirable theory because the little ones are those who conflict through. and also... Divorce isn't a speedy/undemanding restore.. under no circumstances. i be conscious of a woman now who's in a authentic undesirable want of a divorce and that is going to fee her $3500, time, bullshit, that's now complicated, no longer after 25 years.

well, if you feel that way, come live at my house!!! You would sure change your mind real fast.... and I have a sewing machine, but I refuse to use it because every time I try it costs me $200 or more to fix it......... in which case, since you think I have so much free time and do not have a job, you would have to pay for and you would still not have any clothes to wear!!!!
Further more, if you want clothes made for you, either pay for it or do it yourself!

Yes honey.
and saying "I can't sew well" is no excuse. (especially because of the modern appliances)
The family shouldn't have to suffer just because the woman was too lazy to learn how to sew.
Of course they should get some store-bought clothes but most of it should be made by the mother/wife.
It saves the hard-earned money the husband made and keeps women from getting more spoiled and lazy than some already are.
Now what color should I make your next shirt honey?
XOXO

are you living in the 1800's?? who said women had more free time? Women work hard in the kitchen, cleaning, taking care of kids, and juggling jobs. Why cant men do it huh? That is a pretty sexist attitude you know. No offense. Yes maybe for a b-day or xmas gift they might knit something, but it doesnt have to be their job to handle everything!

I would like to be the first to take what is on the runway and do some Quality Control before masses of tackiness are put out for us to shop from. If that is Making Clothes then I need to dictate to end the horror that is going on in the department stores.
I like the style in which you provoke answers. KUDOS

I agree 100%, is way better, think of the money somebody can save on expensive clothes, besides that's why we have sewing machines.

Babe your Q's still amaze me...=)
I do sew but it is on a machine handed down to me from my Grandmother,it's an antique,1938 Singer, with a treadle..its awesome but not an easy task..I am not an expert seamstress so my work is basic but hey I enjoy the challenge..
Far as being sexist in your statement well thats something I come to expect from you..I am still a fan of yours despite it..=)
