Excessive heat or improper warm up during cold weather.Keeping your cooling system in good condition, make sure you have the correct amount of coolant/antifreeze in your system. During start up let the engine properly warm up, do not gun the engine right after you start it up no matter if it is in the warm months, also make sure your oil level is correct at all times, keep an eye on your gauges when operating your vehicle. also change oil and filter and check air filter, do preventative maintenance checks and services.

In a word 'heat'. Could be a bad casting, an overworked piston shaft. But once the metal is compromised any tiny discontinuity will become a larger one. So any engine must have good heat transfer. Oil for moving parts, water and air transferred to the radiator and all sensors working. Change all fluids on a schedule.

Freezing water in the engine.

Use anti-freeze, or drain you engine before it gets realy cold out.

do not step on gas while the engine is cold.
