There is a really great movie called "From Hell" with Johnny Depp and Heather Graham. In the Special Features of the DVD, there is a section where they go through all of the suspects and details of the investigation. Rent it. You won't regret it.

Jack the Ripper was the name given to a serial killer active in the 1880s of the poor section of London called Whitechapel.
His vicitms were basically prostitutes.
He was never identified or captured. No one knows who he was.

No-one really knows for definite who he was. And the lack of DNA evidence means that we probably never will.
But there are a lot of theories, each with their own reasons, of who was the ripper.
