How about just spending some time with her? The two of you make it a girls day.! When I was twelve I loved hanging out with the adults. Pick her up in the morning, maybe a Saturday, go to breakfast. Then if you are in a area that has cool shopping , take her there and shop around with her. Get to know what she likes and then, if you want to buy her a gift, you will know what to get her. Go buy a couple of kits and fly them together. Hang out and just listen to music together. Play what you like, then what she likes. Sing along with hair brushes! Be silly. Listen to her, get to know her. Then next year you will know just what to get her. I don't think we spend enough time with our families. When I was little I loved to hang with my Aunt's. Even if it was just going around visiting other Aunts or cousins. Those times are still the best gifts.

if you don't really know your niece well enough to know what she likes then money is the best option. A bunch of my friends and I were having a disgussion about gift cards not to long ago, a gift card is like a gift of money, without the freedom of spending it where you want to. money is a universal gift card. When I was a young teen all my relatives would get me gift cards for places there kids liked, but I never bought CD's or went to the movies.
If you would rather do something a bit more personal, you could take her out to supper at an interesting place, or if she likes swimming or mini golf you could take her to do something like that with you.

My little sister is turning 12 soon too and she is the same not a tom boy but not a girlie girl she has asked for tracksuit bottoms and perfume from me. If u ask me perfume at this age is a good thing maybe take a out for the day and let her pick a present and let her think she is growing up by making decisions for herself.

Get a cute outfit for her..something either for nice family things for a meal or something then she wont complain about having nothing to wear or something she can go out in with friends ..Or buy her the latest dvds or cds..cant go wrong with that..
Or make-up 12 year olds like to try out make up and hair stuff with there mates in sleepovers and stuff. Or if you really cant think of anything just give her the 30 pound and say she can buy it on what ever she likes (aprt from crap lol)
Good luck

Here in the US, a gift card is a great gift for a teenager or pre-teen. It works like a credit card, in that it has a certain dollar value, and lets them go to the store, mall, etc. and pick out whatever they want. I've never been to the UK, but I have to assume that they exist there. See if you can find one in a music store, or a shopping mall, or a popular clothes store. If she has an Ipod, you can get one from I-tunes as well.

Does she have a school locker? If so, try buying some cool magnets and a locker shelf for her. You could give her a mall gift certificate (where it can be used in any store at that mall). Or maybe take her out to dinner and see a movie.

Look at argos and new look, claires accessories etc they're have good stuff for "pre-teens". My cousin isnt very girly either she likes diaries, pens, claires accessories shes likes as they have "punk" stuff there and none girly jewellery!
She likes to buy clothes so clothes vouchers or buying her a top I know she'd like works well!
Erm...something for her room like a blow up chair? Talking photo frame etc?
Or tell her if she doesnt give you a clue she gets socks ;-) that worked with my 10yr cousin!!!

Books. You can buy about three with thirty pounds, which means you can also buy hre something small and pretty, like jewelry or chocolate. But, books. There should be a section of a bookstore with books for pre-teens and teenagers. You'll know which one(s) to buy for her.
