If you are considering a job in development (or fund raising) for a nonprofit org, it can be very rewarding, particularly if you have a 'soft spot" for the cause you are assisting. There is a lot of turnover, and fairly low starting pay, so getting the first job should not be too difficult. They starting pay varies according to the size of the organization, but if it turns out you are good at it, and enjoy it, it is fairly easy to move up and increase your earning potential.
Although it seems obvious, you need to be very comfortable asking people for money (it's harder than it sounds) and have some experience or interest in event planning. You should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, which you will need if the job requires any grantsmanship, and some fluency in a different language is always welcome.
If you want to learn more about the field, the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics Career Guide to Industries has a link for Advocacy, Grantmaking, and Civic Organizations at http://www.bls.gov/oco/cg/cgs054.htm that describes the industry, possible jobs, salary ranges, and outlook. It's worth taking a look if you are interested in pursuing this type of position.
