It's a moniker for the unknown reason why the universe's expansion is inferred to be accelerating, instead of decelerating, as one would expect from the gravitational attraction of the galaxies. I call it a moniker because it's not even clear that the underlying reason should be describable as a form of energy, though it could be.

There is a lot of speculation about the nature of dark energy, but at the present time nothing is really known about it for sure except that it exists (and maybe even that is not certain).
