i tottaly agree with you. mcgrath is the game’s greatest new ball bowler of all time, for all the money in this world. mcgrath is gifted with the Golden Touch of getting wickets and the manner in which he meticulously gets them is something really amazing!.He is a bowling machine. And all this has not come without so many hours of practice in the nets and sheer determination to excel.
No other bowler can be compared to mcgrath. No other bowler has single-handedly taken the opposition for a ride of their lives. For me mcgrath is the most respected and most sought after bowler.
to me six on six just outside the off stump is some phenomenon!

He is certainly up there with the best. But there is not such a big gap between 1st and 2nd as there is in batting (Bradman first, daylight second!!). I think you could just about throw a blanket over the top three or four. Each of the top bowlers brings their own uniqueness to the game. As everyone seems to be suggesting, it is very hard to split between Akram, Lillie and McGrath. Akram - certainly the best left armer of all time. Lillie - fearsome when he started (especially when teamed with Thommo!!) and great tactician by the time he finished. McGrath - impossible to score off and took wickets at will! Then we have the at least 6 West Indian greats - Roberts, Holding, Walsh, Ambrose (I will never forget a 7fa he took to destroy Australia in a test - frightening!!) Garner and Marshall...phew they were just plain hard work to watch let alone what it would have been like to bat against. So, in summery I would have to answer No! There is no clear 'Best' fast bowler of all time. Just a select group that would make the hair on the back of your neck stand up! We haven't even begun to mention older style bowlers - like Frank Tyson. Rumor has it that he was just plane scary. He wasn't called Typhoon for nothing! He is an immediate example that I am sure would be able to claim the mantle - only problem I have is the amount of tests he played. But then again, they did not play as many in the 50's anyway.

The best bowler in terms of wickets taken is Shane Warne of Australia. Mcgrath can be counted as one of the finest fast bowlers of all times with his splendidly consistent performance. He is also the highest wicket taker in any World Cup after his WC 2007 performance.

Nowhere near
Not even the best Australian, Lillee & Thompson come above him, and then you have to look at the likes of Fred Truman (would have had much better career stats if not for clashes with England management), Malcolm Marshall, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, even Alan Donald at his best (under rated due to limited opportunity through apartheid) etc
He's the best of his generation, a generation where there has been some fairly weak opposition (unfortunately including England for a large part of his career) for him to steamroller, but that's all.
The others named played against consistently high quality opposition.
John Arlott considered Fiery Fred the best he had ever seen, and Arlott is someone I respected.

There are faster bowlers, but Glenn McGrath was an excellent bowler. It's so sad that he retired just yesterda, but i think it's nice that he helped his team win the CWC again.
