I found an amazing glass bowl, and thought it would be beautiful with a single fish in it. I've seen people with goldfish in a bowl with just water. Is that okay? I feel like it wouldn't be healthy or fun for the fish.

Please let me know if this is okay for a fish, before I go and place one in the bowl I purchased.
Also, if it is okay, are there any other fish that would do well in a plain bowl like that? Maybe one of those beta fish?

First off, you should keep in mind that goldfish grow huge - depending on the type anywhere from 8" long to over a foot long, if they're kept long enough and in a proper environment. They are also extremely messy and can live for decades, if allowed to. In a bowl their growth and lives get severely stunted. Some people don't care because they are 'just fish' or call stunting 'growing to their environment' - dead wrong but I'm sure it makes them feel better about it.

You really should have gravel in the bowl, because this is where bacteria grows to keep toxin levels from rising and killing the fish.

A betta can be kept in a bowl and will live a while, but they thrive best in a proper, well planted, filtered, and heated tank. In a bowl it will float around doing nothing for all of its life and you may as well get a plastic one- in my planted tank he is very active and can actually behave naturally.

Well, usually you would see a goldfish or a betta in a bowl and that would be it. Though it is highly recommended that you have all the other things like a filter and some gravel. If not, then you would have to do frequent water changes to prevent ammonia levels to rise. Life plants can very beneficial to the water quality. If you don't want plants that require maintenance, you can just try adding java moss. The moss would help keep your nitrates down.

I've tried without much success the fish need filters because of the good bacterias that condition the water, I have had sucess keeping a fish in a bowl with rocks (used rocks store good bacteria and java moss a live plant that adds oxegen to the water , But most fish besides bettas, and maybe gold fish, need bubbles to oxegenate the water

lots of people do it;if you go to the petstore and look at the bettas you'll see that most bettas are kept in little plastic cups where they can barely move without plants or rocks or companions...alot of people argue that this is because fish can't think or feel so it doesn't matter....now I don't know that for sure so I like to play it safe: spoil my fish with tons of room; rocks to hide under and behind; plants to swim around; and friends in their tank heck I even give them shrimp treats once a week...I you agree with those scientists that say a goldfish has a memory to three seconds then buy a smaller breed and put them in the bowl...or a betta.........but if you're gonna feel guilty then maybe get one of those ten gallon tanks or they even have five and ten gallon bowls, put some rocks and a plant in it..........shop around no matter what look you have in your apartment or house you'll be able to find fish bowl interiors to match your own if you visit enough pet stores

No, goldfish are EXTREMELY dirty fish. Live plants are ideal, because goldfish put out a lot of amonia and the live plants will feed on the amonia taking it out of the water. Gravel catches waste, which again goldfish put out a lot of. So you really need gravel in any tank, and for goldfish if u don't watnt to clean the tank weekly then do live plants. Betas live well in bowls, they are very clean and don't need a lot of space. They are very happy in 2 gallons, but not those little itty bitty bowls they give them to you in. once they have room to swim they are very happy, but a normal bowl should be fine.

When providing a home for a fish, you should be thinking about making it as natural as possible. A bowl without any plants or rocks would be stressful for the fish, and it would be unlikely to live very long.

No fish should be kept in a bowl. Bettas ned heaters, goldfish need large tanks with filters, so neither would work
