My Grannie Mary... she somehow settled my soul... she taught me how to listen... really listen. The kind of listening that happens in the space between words. She was and is very much the sort of woman that I aspire to be. (She passed away Dec. 2002... almost 88 years old. She was a valued Elder... simply put, an amazing woman. She survived Government regulated Indian Residential schools with her language and culture intact (no easy feat, removed as she was from her family at the age of 5, and not returned until the age of 15 when the school burned to the ground). She raised 14 children, listened with a peaceful heart, made tough decisions when needed, abstained from alcohol and drugs in a community rife with abuse, gave love to everyone... and stood her ground... without knocking anyone else down. Even when you'd done wrong, she had a way of helping you find the learning. Kindness was her tenet in life... kindness and the love that flows from it. She was a good woman.

I don't know if it's ironic or not, but my Mom who has been gone since 1988 still has a big influence on my life. I told my brother that when we do something nice for someone, she lives on.
I always knew my Mom loved me and that's a good thing for a kid to grow up with.

Probably my kids. They make me laugh, and I think I am a better person because of them.
