When you are given a HW it is important that you are able to do these for yourself. So here are the basic ideas:
1. Multiply out the brackets
2. If you have a term in x squared then collect ALL the terms on the left hand side so that you have = 0 on the right
3. Try to factorise the LHS into the shape (x + a)(x + b) = 0
4. Then either x = -a or else x = -b
5. If it won't factorise then you will need the formula or else complete the square

Here is a similar question so that you can see this in action

(x + 3)(x - 2)= 2x (x + 3)

1. x^2 +3x - 2x -6 = 2x^2 + 6x
2. x^2 + x - 6 = 2x^2 + 6x
x^2 + 5x + 6 = 0
3. (x + 3)(x + 2) = 0
4. x + 3 = 0 or x + 2 = 0
x = -3 or x = -2

Try to do your own question now.

Simple as follows:

(x-8) (x-2) = 2x (x-5)
= x^2 - 8x - 2x + 16 = 2x^2 - 10x
= x^2 - 8x - 2x + 16 - 2x^2 + 10x
= -x^2 + 16 = 0
Therefore, x^2 = 16
Therefore x = plus or minus 4

Hope this helps and vote for my 10 points!!

x² - 10x + 16 - 2x² + 10x = 0
-x² + 16 = 0
x² - 16 = 0
(x - 4) (x + 4 ) = 0
Answer is x = 4, or x = -4

(x-8) (x-2) = 2x (x-5)
x^2 - 2x - 8x + 16 = 2x^2 - 10x
0 = 2x^2 - x^2 - 10x + 2x + 8x - 16
0 = x^2 - 16
0 = (x-4)(x+4)
x = -4 or 4

Note that a^2 - b^2 = (a-b)(a+b)

RULES
A letter is also called a variable . It can be any number.
If you have a variable and a number (eg. 2x) then that means that number is 2 times whatever x is.

I am sorry but as you have not given me the value of x i cannot help.

I hope I have helped in some way though !!!

Multiply the bracketed terms and you will end up with terms including X^2, X and a simple number.

When common terms are added/subtracted you will be left with values of X squared, X and a +/- number = 0

You will recognise this as a Quadratic Equation which you may solve graphically, by use of formula or by Completing the square.

You should now be able to complete your homework.

When others work it out for you they are doing the homework you should be doing.

x² - 2x - 8x + 16 = 2x² - 10x
x² - 10x + 16 = 2x² - 10x
0 = x² - 16
(x - 4).(x + 4) = 0
x = 4, x = - 4

factor one part at a time
(x-8)(x-2)
then
-2x(x-5)
I get:
-x^2+16

(x-8)(x-2)=2x(x-5)
x²-10x+16=2x²-10x
x²-10x+16-2x²+10x=0
-x²+16=0
x²-16=0
(χ-4)(χ+4)=0
x-4=0 or x+4=0
x=4 or x=-4
