Well for one it will cost you a fortune the way gas prices are but it also could be harm full to your car and yourself. Depending on the temp outside your car could overheat, the fan, radiator, thermostat, and water pump are designed to keep your vehicle between 170 and 210 deg. At an idle on a hot day some cars just cant keep it cool enough, but if its cool out side and your rich let her run as long as you want.

Besides running out of gas your car could be towed away if you left it running and you were not in the car.
Its against the law to leave a motor vehicle unattended and running.
It could be stolen .

A lot of things!! If it is running inside of an enclosure it could be potentially deadly to the occupants. If you are sitting inside the vehicle, leaks in the exhaust system could allow exhaust gasses to enter the passenger compartment and could have deadly results. Burns gas unnecessarily. Gets hot. And a lot of other things. Mostly it is a safety issue.

It burns up fuel. So, unless there is a necessity to leave your engine keep running (if it is too cold, it is better to let the engine run and warm the car up), you are wasting gasoline and money.
