I thought there were supposed to be flying cars and deep space travel but instead the world gets HD-DVD and MP3 players. :-( Do you think we'll ever see the "typical" future-like items in our lifetimes? Like flying cars or things like that?

When I was a kid, cable television didn't exist, or remote controls, microwave ovens, video games, anti-lock brakes, air bags, video games, personal computers, and the Internet. This millennium is futuristic enough for me...I couldn't have imagined many of the things I have today back then. If I had a flying car, I'd be dead within a week...I've crashed the non-flying kind three times.

There's a big difference between imagining these things, and actually making them work. Writers and movie makers can ignore the laws of physics with impunity. Engineers don't have that luxury, and doing so may cost them millions of dollars, or even their life.

Flying cars are an engineering nightmare. They have to be light to fly, or have obscenely powerful engines. Hello, lousy mileage. They would have to have 2 separate drive systems to turn the prop or the wheels. Hello, complex and expensive repairs.

Deep space travel is the same thing. Just getting to the moon took the US 10 years and thousands of engineers, technicians, and managers to accomplish it. The effort to go back will probably take the same amount. Climbing out of this gravity well is a big part of the problem. But one person can spend 6 months and dream up an intricate plot that contains enough elements to make it sound good, and make people think that it's easy.

Well If you ask the last cop that pulled me over there are flying cars, but for real in my lifetime we have come leaps and bounds. I seriously doubt I'll live long enough to see what you think of as "typical" future-like items. Especially if they start euthanization as a way of population control.

Not in my lifetime, I don't think so. The typical future stuff will take a long time before they appear and become available for everyone to use.

I'm actually glad we don't have flying cars yet. Some people can't drive in TWO dimensions -- you add that THIRD (up and down) and -- hello, SKY rage!

I was disappointed with the fact that there were no flying cars.
