Turtles under 4" in diameter are illegal to buy and sell in the US. There's no reason to have one this small. It shouldn't eat feeder fish until it's at least 2 inches in diameter. When it reaches this size, it can eat goldfish, rosy reds, barbs, platies, guppies, and other small minnows. I'd recomend getting either a red eared slider or a yellow bellied slider for a beginner because they are low maintance compared to other turtles.

ps. Don't ever feed a turtles tuna. It causes digestive problems that lead to diharea.

Best thing @ this age is to use meal, wax or earth worms ... in a flat type dish..DO NOT leave the worms in with the turtle, they do bite..I'd use something big enough to set the turtle in ( like a pie tin ) with the worms & watch..if he eats, good deal, if he don't start eating within 15 minutes..take him & the worms out, try again the next day till he eats ( no guarantees he will eat tho, especially if this a baby, wild caught turtle )..these worms can be purchased any where they sell reptiles or often fish bait shops too..best way to have your own worms & crawlies is get a bag of clean, plain dirt or potting soil ( Nothing with fertilizers, etc ), put some cuts in the bottom & some holes in the bag, lay it cut side down on the ground, keep it moist ( not soggy wet ) & the worms, etc move in, then ya turn the bag over & dig for the crawlies ..wala..food .. you can keep some alive in the frig by taking a plastic margarine or cool whip tub, put small holes in the lid, some of the soil or pine shavings, this will keep in a frig for a few days ...even better tho is to never take any creature from the wild, they can carry diseases & it's Nature's way that some die, so there isn't over population...Take Care & Peace :)

How on Earth would a turtle that small catch a fish? Small turtles usually eat things like worms, insects, shrimp, krill, etc. as well as good quality turtle pellets.

Most aquatic turtles eat insects at this age.
Most LOVE small earthworms.
