Isn't it easier to see anything when it's closer to you??

When mars and earth are closest they are both on the same side of the sun, and mars nears its zenith on our horizon at the darkest part of our night.

When mars and earth are farthest apart, mars is on the opposite side of the sun, and you would need to peer through a daylit sky to resolve it.

I have seen Saturn through my telescope after sunrise, on several different occasions. You must know exactly where to look to see a planet in the day sky. But, like the lunar surface, the detail tends to get washed out.

I thought your question was actually quite interesting, so I gave it a star. Yes, the obvious answer is that the closer something is, the easier it is to see. In general, that would be the case, but not always. Suppose the moon reaches perigee during the new moon. It would then be closest to earth, but with the sun behind it it would also be very difficult to see.

When Mars is at its closest to Earth, it is 46,500,000 miles from Earth. That is when the Sun, Earth, and Mars are in alignment. Mars would appear to be full, like the full moon per-say. When Mars is an evening or morning star like Venus, it can be up to 3 times the distance from Earth and be a crescent, like the crescent moon.

It's easier to see my TV when I'm 5 feet away as opposed to when I'm 50 feet away. I'm guessing it's the same with Mars.
