Angie and clare start with the same number.
Angie multiplies it by 4 then subtracts her answer from 6.
Clare adds 3 then multiplies by 5.
They finish with the same number.
What was their starting number???

It may be that i'm thick but this does seem quite hard, i've tried loads but the answers i get dont seem to work. Please help!!!

Let the number be x i.e an unknown
Angie multiplies by 4 (4x) and subtracts her answer from 6 (6-4x)
Clare adds 3 (x+3) abd multiplies by 5 (5x + 15)
The numbers are the same so
6-4x = 5x + 15
-9 = 9x
x = -1

check: angie multiplies by 4 (-4) and takes from 6 : 6 -(-4) = 10
clare adds 3 (2) and multiplies by 5 (10)

Let x be the starting number.
Angie gets 6-4x
Clare gets 5(x+3) = 5x +15.
So 6-4x = 5x+15
Add 4x to each side
6 = 9x + 15
Subtract 15 from both sides
9x = -9
x = -1.
Check: Angie gets -4 and 6 -(-4) = 10
Clare gets 2 and 5*2 = 10,
so -1 is the answer.

6 - 4x = 5 (3 + x)
6 - 4x = 15 + 5x
- 9 = 9 x
x = -1

6 - (-4) = {(-1)+3})5
10 = (2)5

This is not a problem you can just luck out on the answer. You need to follow the directions EXACTLY, to set up the equations correctly, AND watch your signs carefully.

Let this number be x.
As their final answers are the same,
6 - 4x = 5(x + 3)
6 - 4x = 5x + 15
6 - 15 = 5x + 4x
-9 = 9x
x = -9 / 9
x = -1

Let the number be x.
6-4x = 5(x+3)
6-4x = 5x +15
6-15 = 5x +4x
-9 = 9x
x = -1

if the starting number=A then
angie=(A*4)-6
clare=(A+3)*5
because angie=clare then
(A*4)-6=(A+3)*5
4A-6 = 5A+15
4A-5A = 15+6
-A = 21
A = -21

so the starting number is -21

Let the numbey they started with be called n.
ANGIE: 4n - 6
CLARE: 5(n+3)
THEREFORE: 4n - 6 = 5(n+3)
MULTIPLY OUT THE BRACKETS: 4n - 6 = 5n+15
GET ALL THE nS ON ONE SIDE (minus 4n): -6 = n+15
MINUS 15: -21 = n
THEREFORE, they both started with -21.
