I have about 2 khoi fish in my fountain on my deck. My fountain is fairly small and it's not very deep. My khoi fish keep on jumping out of it! I put a metal netting over it but it looks very tacky. Does anyone know how to keep my fish in the fountain but keep the fountain looking good?

not matter what anyone here says, jumping is NOT normal for koi. It is a sign of bad conditions.

you might want to check the PH and temperature of the water as this can be a reason why a fish jumps - they try to escape bad conditions.

PH should be 7.2-8.
temperature should be 74 to 76 degrees F. any drop or gain of 5 degrees or more can severely stress koi.

temperature in particular is important for koi health.

if PH and temp are fine, you need to treat for bacterial infections and parasites.

also, how big are your koi and how much water does the fountain hold? it may not be big enough.

koi live around 35 years if looked after correctly (actually 150 years is not unheard of).

Don't spend any more money on the doomed fish. Look up Koi Culture. They are very large fish, requiring pond sized enclosures. If they are jumping out it's because the enclosure is too small. Take them back and get smaller fish when the overnight water temps stay above 70 degrees F,you can keep Guppies,Platies ,or other tropical fish in the fountain.

This may be the fish trying to get air. Koi are pond fish and grow very large. You don't mention the size of the fountain (the footprint and gallon capacity). A regular sized goldfish needs 10 gallons a piece.
Koi can get to be 3 feet long when properly cared for. Is there filtration in the pond, something that can remove the waste the fish produce (through exhalations, decaying food particles, feces, urine?) Ammonia is toxic as is nitrite. They may be trying to escape because of water conditions.
If that's the case, they will try to jump out hoping to survive their toxic environment.
Please provide more information on your water testing (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate), fountain size and gallons. Be aware, too, they are coldwater fish. If they're in shallow water in the sun, the water may be getting to warm for them, robbing them of oxygen. Many pondkeepers have chillers in some areas to keep the water no higher than mid 70s.

I think its way too small for Koi if it fits on your desk. Koi need big roomy ponds. They won't survive. Koi require 50 gallons per fish. Your desk would collapse under the wieght. Remove the fish, keep the fountain.

Actually fish need more space than you think....
Especially khoi !!! They need a very big fountain.
The metal netting is probably scaring them too.
To keep the fish in try making it LOOK bigger .
Put mirrors on the sides and maybe the fish will fall for
it mine did.... Are they new? If they are maybe they'll adapt
to their small space.

Get a new one, you should get a bigger one if two fishes are put into a too small bowl they can die more easily my sisters fish died because they didn't have enough space, I think you should try and get a new one your old one is too small.
