Check the Eclipse for C++ (CDT)... you will find it quite good and it's available for many platforms... more information on the link below.

Everyone will have their own personal preferences in editors. If you are working in a UNIX environment, I'd recommend giving Vim a try. It can have a bit of a learning curve, but once you become familiar with it the keyboard shortcuts can be quite useful. If you happen to be working in Windows, you can use GVim.

Try Notepad++
It has a parser for several languages and you can create your own language parser if the one you want is not supplied.
It also has line numbers and an impressive find option.
Yes it is free.
