Do you think this is part of their master plan?

The government no.

However I think the Media always needs a story to up their competitors. So in an effort to "up" each other they will do nearly anything, no matter how shameless, to try to get the best story. I don't think there is a Media conspiracy or anything like that, however I think in the natural spirit of competition they have found that the more outrageous they can make a story sound, the more listeners they get. They have also found that the more they can pit political views against each other the more fodder they have for their stories. In the end, the News media is selling advertising time during their news, the more viewers they have the more money they earn. Sometimes it's best to keep in mind the news media is a buisiness, trying to earn money like any other buisness, they are not impartial.

In short..... I don't think they find pleasure in "dividing" the American people, but I do think they find pleasure in making money. All they have to do is convince themselves that the story they are spinning is the truth, and convince themselves they are doing us a public service to report their story, even if they are the who are creating the story -- albiet inderectly -- by pouring salt into somebodies wound, or otherwise doing something to make a story out of nothing.

The media has turned from those who hunt for a story to those who make a story happen. Yes the media feeds into the separation between us and I think some do get pleasure in it, not so sure about a master plan but sometimes it seems that way. The media has turned into a monster who needs to be feed all the time.

If the media and government are doing it for "pleasure," then so are the political science professors and the law school professors.

But in answer to your question, no, they are not doing it for "pleasure" nor is it some part of a nefarious "master plan." Many of us take the words "liberal" and "conservative" very seriously.

The media definitely makes money when America is divided.

The media is a propaganda tool, it always has and will always be as such.
Controlling (or not so much) the media sets the level of propaganda, and thus makes it easier to control the general population for the desired effect

In answer to your question, I don't believe so, but there are cases in point that could be argued, such as Karl Rove

Yes. Like what Cyclops said, if you can divide the people, you can control the people. If we could all come together and stop bickering over the little things, we would make it that much harder for the government to control us.
