Several reasons. Identity & medical theft are the 2 top reasons. Also, if a criminal got arrested & gave your SSN, you could get into trouble later if that person ever messed up again & the police went after him. They might show up at your door.

Because if you don't, some corrupt, ruthless, greedy person out there will steal your identity and cause you MAJOR headaches trying to get it straightened out. DO NOT GIVE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER TO ANYONE, except your employer because they will need it in order to put you on their payroll.
