I agree that the 'common man' in the Uk should not donate to the third world. Firstly the goverment donates millions/billions to the third world each year, direct from our taxes anyway, so our donations are tiny in comparison anyway. I also believe that there are many other issues in the UK (poverty, crime, NHS etc etc) that the goverment should be resolving with our tax money, before even thinking about the third world. The best thing the third world could have is education about contaception to cut down on the huge families. Also a lot of our 'charity' if directly sent to the African goverments does not get spent on the poverty stricken , it just lines the pockets of ministers and goes towards funding civil wars or mis treating of others

If we continue to donate to Africa we may be able to eventually eradicate poverty. We may also be able to persuade more Africans to make something of their own countries so they feel less inclined to move out, thus leaving their country deprived of brains and skills.
Albino above is quite wrong about big familes. Big families are not a problem since they are able to survive and thus reduce the need for aid and social welfare. This idea is coming to UK soon as a method of reducing the need for social welfare especially amongst the older generation.
Those who wish to either cut back or stop donations going to Africa will have a very hard struggle and will lose their case in the end. Both Labour and Conservative parties are committed to the idea of financial assistance to all Africa. Africa is the gene pool of the Human Race - without them we die.

I suppose the millionaires and billionaires worked pretty hard in the beginning to acquire their successful businesses not all of them were rich on starting up, .
That would be like saying anyone who earns more than £75,000 a year in Britain should give the surplus to Africa
Bill Gates is fabulously wealthy and can afford to do as he likes with his money
These African countries should be given no real money they should be offered education , equipment and workers to improve their land, wells for water etc but not hard cash.
The Africans who are living in this country i.e Doctors,Nurses, Engineers, Entrepreneurs should be encouraged to go back and help their own people.
If the people who started Yahoo or any other successful businesses thought that when they became millionaires they would be forced to give money to Africa, do you think they would have set up in the first place, maybe, but I think their expense accounts would be treble than what they would be now.
I think it is up to the individual to decide which charity to give to.

we shouldnt they dont need to eat they need to be educated so they can go out to the wide African job market and make somthing of them selfs so they can stop mooching off us americans because you know if u give a man a fish you feed him for a day but if you teach a man to fish there might not be any fish in his pond so basicly past the sarcasm the reason we need to give is because these people have nothing and realy have no chance now you might say that the money given has gotten no where thats because there is so much starvation in affrica and it would take all the billinares money to solve it completly but even if it helps one famliy isnt it worth it well or you could spend that 2000 bucks and buy a HDtv that will probly break in a year or two

We don`t help them its the west who deliberately cause the problems in the first place .the example below is only a fraction of what the US and UK have done to countries all over the world The reality is the west leaves them with no hope of improving their lives
Facing the greatest threat from black Africans gaining their freedom, South Africa’s white minority government orchestrated Renamo’s terror campaign in Mozambique and, in conjunction with the remnant colonial power-structures, ran similar covert destabilization campaigns in Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.26
The CIA, with support from Belgium, destabilized the Congo and assassinated the charismatic and popular Patrice Lumumba (run a Google/Nexus-Lexus search) before he could be legitimized as their leader through elections. Control still could not be assured, so Zaire was created to remove those rich copper deposits from the uncontrollable Congolese and Joseph Mobutu was installed as the Belgian/American puppet. That it was business interests that were being protected in the Congo is just as obvious as in General Smedley Butler’s overseas incursions by U.S. marines addressed above.27
As they were breaking free after WWII, many countries of Africa were looking forward to federating as a United States of Africa, building their infrastructure, educating their citizens, building modern industry, and joining the world of developed nations. The suppressions of those breaks for freedom on the southern cone of Africa cost many millions of innocent lives. Africans do not need aids but honesty from their leaders and colonial masters
who is behind the blood diamond?
who is behind the crude oil?
the money stolen from Africa where are they going to?
the ammunition's Africans use in killing each other where are they coming from?
until they find means in dismantling the Mafia's involve in this dubious and tyrannic trade Africa will continue to remain a God forsaken place.

For a start, you hardly donate anything to Africa, and probably nothing at all. Also, you contribute in an economy that keeps Africa poor and corrupt, for instance arms dealing and gun running.
Africa is rich with diamonds and gold. That means they should all be rich, right? It's a classic example of how free markets don't work. They're not just stupid people, they've been around much longer than we have.
All the conflicts in Africa today are solvable. But they are also profitable - and pay your masters' wage.

It very much depends what view you take on others. Some capitalists believe that if the poor put more effort in they would be more rich, but looking at their socio-economic circumstances, that really is a load of balls.
I suppose it boils down to if you were poor and starving, would you not want a rich person to give you money to survive? No one, absolutely no one, needs as much money as most million/billionaires to survive - it is just greed.

Money can only do so much.
The main problem is that there are too many people in the world. Family planning is needed just as much as food.
But I do agree that the "haves" in this world should dig deep & give to the "have nots". They will never be able to spend their wealth & can't take it with them when they die so why hoard it?
