That sounds like me! My employers from the past were always surprised that my work was actually done and that I actually went the extra mile for customers and that I had excellent results in my projects, because in my overall behaviour, it always seemed that I was not working at all. I was always joking with colleagues and walking around etc.
But in a professional environment I don't think it is always appropriate. You need to know where to draw the line. If you don't appear serious, you won't be taken serious and that goes with respect too.
I just feel, as long as the assignment is done and there are results and happy customers, it is okay!

It depends on the company culture and the people you work for and with. Where I work, it's perfectly okay to joke around at times. We don't do it when the CEO is back in our department, but my boss and my colleagues know it is necessary to enjoy the atmosphere and be able to let off some steam...we work for a Hospice!

Sounds like an interesting job. You'll be collecting samples of pepper and performing statistical tests about fly dung. Surely that will be interesting enough that you won't shirk your responsibilities.

Yes - as a matter of fact, I think it's important to be able to have fun with anything you do - especially work - if you find a way to have fun with what you're doing it makes even the worst situations more bearable.
