There are two types of medicaid. One is for your private treatments in the community and the other is school based. That money is from the state and doesn't take away from your allotment and never runs out. The schools then bill for the time spent with your child and is reimbursed. The money is most likely then put back into the special education department and often times is used to hire extra personnel that your child is being serviced by or the different items in the classroom. Any evaluations that are done by the speech pathologist or school psychologist are also billable to educational medicaid where the school will receive benefits from it.
The number is given to the district medicaid officer they submit your child's name and birthdate and number to the state database to double check and then return it to the case manager.
I would give the school the medicaid number.

There seems to be a big misunderstanding in every IEP I attend, that somehow this interferes with your personal claims for Medicaid or that somehow when you go to the SLP or doctor that somehow you will be told that your insurance is used up. This is not true. The school has to verify whether or not your kid is eligible. Here is some more info on WHY they do that. Scroll down to "Protecting Children's Health in Schools Act of 2007" and read the summary.

(As for the other posters here, it is naive to think that the school district pays for everything. Districts receive state and federal money which has to be accounted for.)

My son is also autistic and receives speech and occupational therapy through the school. I have never been asked for insurance-we don't qualify for medicaid/medicare. The school is legally obligayed to pay for these services according to IDEA legislation. They receive federal money to do so. I would ask the school to provide you in writing exactly why they need your childs number and then call medicaid to see if this is legal.

DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM! My son is Autistic, and because he has an IEP, any school district he lives in throughout the United States is required by law to provide to him, free of charge, any services that his IEP requires, i.e. speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy. If you choose to seek other therapeutic resources for him outside the school, which I do suggest, then that would be covered by Medicaid or other insurance. Also, if you were to move, and that district was not equipped to handle his IEP, like they didn't have a speech therapist, they are also required to hire one. A school he attended in New York asked me the same thing. I went to the Board of Education for that state, and found that this is an illegal practice. State and federal funding is provided for this. You already pay for these services by paying taxes!

I have a 9 yr old son with Autism and school provided speech therapy and also occupational therapy that he recieves. I was never asked for their medicade #'s. the school has funding for each child which pays for such special services which may be needed. My son's services come through IU-13 which is based through the school system even though he is in a regular shool. I would talk to someone else and educate myself before giving too much info. I only give the school info I feel they need cause they can sometimes ask wayyyy too much. Medicaid is used for services outside the school system. Services recieved in school are taken care of by the school.

NO! do not give it to them. They are cheating the american taxpayers because they are supposed to use federal education money to pay for therapy. They are not providing MEDICAL interventions, they are providing EDUCATIONAL, and any school will tell you in an IEP the difference when you ask why they won't do x, y or z.
In addition, when the school has used up your allotment from medicaid, how are you going to get private therapies? No school provides as much therapy an autistic child needs, 40 hours of ABA, at least five of speech and five of OT EVERY WEEK. I'd ask in writing to show you the state policy requiring medicaid to pay for educational interventions (because Medicaid would be very interested in seeing THAT, i can assure you). When they can show you, in writing, professional policy from the state dept of ed using the medicaid dollars, then I would think about it.

What you will desire to concentration on in an IEP vs. 504 undertaking is the quantity of academic impact her incapacity has on her educationally. There are tests that degree auditory processing, and you're nicely interior of your rights as a parent to request that the college do such sorting out. 504 is an unfunded mandate and particular coaching has federal money, so it would make greater experience (if your daughter qualifies for particular coaching centers) to bypass with the IEP/particular Ed. yet contained in the tip, do what's ultimate to your new child, no rely if or no longer this is a 504 plan or an IEP. sturdy success!

NO, this is illegal. Children with IEP's are suppose to have all their help provided by the SCHOOL. All public schools in USA get state and federal funds to pay for the childs services.
They are wanting to use your medicaid so they can use your childs special ed funding to pay for their football field or something.
Write to them and state that THEY are suppose to pay for your child's education and that you will NOT give this number to them. And also ask for a copy of their written policy that states they can use medicaid to pay for what they are suppose to pay for themselves.
If there is no policy, they can't do this. And believe me, there is none.
I don't know anything about medicaid, but i'm sure there is a limit on what they will pay for? If medicaid pays for the speech, and then stop when they get to their limit, what will you do then?
Dont' use up your medicaid limit on somethign the school is suppose to pay for! You already pay school taxes and this is where they get the funds to pay for your childs services.

Yes, give the school the Medicaid #. Services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc., that children receive through the public school system are actually paid for by the state. The state uses the public schools as a vehicle to make sure these services get to the children who need them most.
