We have a 2001 Toyota Corolla. Somehow the oil leaked out of the motor on a winter night in the middle of nowhere and we had to drive and force the engine to run until we found shelter. Now that it's Spring I'm ready to rebuild it, but was looking for what to expect in repairs. Any ideas or suggestions? What damages occur due to lack of oil? It's not seized the engine will try to fire and almost run.

look for damage in block( cylinder wall scuffing, cam brgs. that have spun and crankshaft damage as well as its bearings in the block. also check cam followers for heat damage mis colored or cracked. make sure every thing is clean even if there is normal wear and tear. there is still metal deposits in the engine that could wreck a new engine. clean every port in the crank and block including the head. and make sure to replace the oil pump.

You're going to need a complete rebuilt or re-manufactured engine. With heads not just a short block without heads. When an engine seizes from lack of oil it damages pistons, piston rings, crank shaft, main crank bearings, rod connector, camshaft, valves, lifters, all seals, In short almost every moving part in the engine is going be severely damaged or destroyed unless you are lucky. When you lose oil everything in the engine goes metal to metal with some parts getting hot enough to weld themselves together which is what causes it to seize up.

lack of oil and running the motor with a load on it (''load on it'' means,in gear and driving down the road) allows unlubricated friction on the internal moving parts, you will need a ''crank kit'' and the cylinders will need to be honed and you'll need new piston rings (compression rings and oil rings)and piston rod bearings and all the engine seals will need to be replaced.and quite possibly you will need the head milled if you blew the head gasket. It is posible that the engine could have more damage to it that makes it NOT worth rebuilding. the only way to know is to tear the motor apart and inspect the internal damage. I wish you all the best in your endeaver, good luck.

Get a rebuilt engine. Every bearing and gasket in that engine could be bad. Trying to fix everything would not be a good idea.
