i have a 4 string bass because it's cheaper. but almost all the famous band's bass players use 5 string bass's! and they don't have money troubles!

as far as i see the extra string doesn't make it harder to use the other strings cos its a lower string...

so i'm wondering what the real reason 5 string bass' aren't used? is it just frowned upon cos bass's have always had 4 strings?

Because 4 strings are how they started. It's only since the 60s when they began experimenting w/ more than 4.

I think most *rock* players are likely influenced by the bass greats (all of whom played 4 string Most of the time):

Paul McCartney
Chris Squire
Geddy Lee
Jaco
John Entwistle
James Jamerson
Jack Bruce

Four strings with alternate tunings to obtain an extended lower range

The 5-string bass with a low "B" provides added lower range, as compared with the 4-string bass. As well, it gives a player easier access to low notes when playing in the higher positions. Five-string basses are common in certain sub-genres of heavy metal which use an extended lower range

It's all a matter of style and preference. Some people are more traditional and go for a more traditional sound. Look at Les Claypool of Primus, I've seen him play a 8 and 12 string bass. It's all about preference and how far you want to go.
