i was really enthused about this person's view of the final. (i don't think this the person is a sri lankan supporter, name is "jackane24") he posted this comment on the BBC 606's- "my team of the world cup"

comment by jackane24

I couldn't care less about the 'team of the tournament'. The whole Cricket World Cup has been a shambles from start to finish, it has been farcical, and the ICC or MCB or the AA or whatever they are called should be forced to resign for the whole calamity. First of all, the final is limited to 38 overs. That is pathetic. We're talking about a match to prove who is the best ODI team in the world, and we can't even get a full overs match. Second of all, they have to use that god awful Duckworth Lewis rubbish. Third of all, Sri Lanka did not know for a full over what they were chasing. They did not even know what score they had to get. Does this sound like an organised and legimate tournament to anyone?

does anyone agree with the point that he made?

i saw the many questions that people have asked and lot of people seem to agree that the game was in favour for the aussies due to horrid weather! it should habe been played on the next day. i cannot be more proud of sri lanka as they fought hard. i don't think any other team played against aussies this well. they all lost to aussies by large margins such as 7 wkts or 100 runs. sri lanka only lost by a small margin of 53 runs but it is the D/L method!

"jackane 24's" opinion cntd.......

"We get towards the end and it becomes shambolic. Sri Lanka COULD NOT SEE THE BALL. What were they meant to hit? Each other? They couldn't even see their team mates. Then they end the match. Or do they. Or don't they. Or do they. You end a match for dark light. So 15 mins later and 15 mins darker, you restart it. This sounds like one very clever committee. Then we get Ponting delivering the final blow by getting Symonds to bowl as slow as possible and with off-spin if Sri Lanka weren't already up the creek. Of course their players are going to get stumped, they couldn't even see the crease. They didn't complain once. Absolutely beautiful sportsmanship. I've supported Aussie for a good 10 years, but even I was praying for Sri Lanka to do the impossible when they restarted the match. I tell you, if Sri Lanka had won the toss and elected to ban, that would mean Austrailia would be in the position Sri Lanka were last night. What would happen then?.....

"jackdane24" cntd......

"The whole cricket world would be up in arms. The Austrailian team would have refused to play and stormed off, every single cricket fan in the world would be complaining that Austrailia didn't get a fair shot, they'd be rearranging the match, etc

If I were Ponting last night on that podium, I would have told the tournament organisers to stick the trophy up their khybers and rearrange the match.

I haven't seen such a shambles since the 2003 American GP. Cricket should be ashamed.

Oh, here's my 'team of the tournament'. It's based on sportsmanship and class.

1. Sri Lanka

Agree! It could have been organized better. It was certain that who ever wins the toss, will bat and will lift the cup. After so long, they couldn't postpone the most important game in cricket till the next day? If Australia was in Sri Lanka's position what would they do? I also didnt like the way the Australians behaved before the last three overs. The way McGrath pulled out the stumps! Australians are a good team, but it doesn't mean they can decide if the game is over or not.I respect Mahela Jayawardene and his team for coming up on stage and not complaining about it, which the Aussies would have done. Australia may have won the WC, good for them, but the Sri Lankans have won the award for Sportsmanship.

Yes, this whole world cup was a shambles from start to finish.
But jackane24 should learn the rules of one day cricket and all the facts before shooting from the mouth.
But considering the umpires didn´t follow the rules I don´t blame him.

The rules are not right, but they say that each team must bat a minimum of 20 overs each for there to be a game. I think there should be an exception for the finals but there is NOT. If Sri Lanka could not bat 20 overs due to the weather the game would be finished the following day.

According to the rules the game should have been decided by the D/L method when the Sri Lankans went off due to poor light.

Secondly Jayawardene, the champion that he is knew that the game was unwinable and unfair on the spectators to return the following day.

He agreed to send his batsman back in and Ponting agreed to bowl slow bowlers. Not out of over confidence but because it was so dark it was unsafe to bowl fast.

Neither team deserved for the game to end like this, but due to Jayawardene´s common sense at least this poorly organized world cup ended one day earlier.

Congratulations to Australia. Commiserations to Sri Lanka. The only high points of this tournament were that to two best teams made the final and Irelands fighting spirit.

While I fully agree that the match of such importance should have been played for full quota of overs and showed excellent sportsman spirit by Sri Lanka, I feel it is unfair to blame Australian Team for not insisting to play the match the next day, as Sri Lankan Team too did not complain about playing the match for 38 overs and demanding to play the match next day.
