Try registering your number here:

http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

I did this about 3 weeks ago and my phone hardly rings during the day now. Prior to that I was getting about 4 or 5 'withheld' numbers calling me per day, so it seems to have worked (touch wood).

You can use Telephone Preference Service, which works after a month or so. Unfortunately companies don't have to use the TPS lists, and overseas companies are exempt. BT have a Choose to Refuse set up that will block calls from hidden numbers. You can instruct unwanted callers never to call you again, and report then to OFCOM if they persist, or possibly send them a bill for answering their calls. Otherwise get caller display (free with BT Privacy at Home) and let unknown numbers go to answerphone. The BT 1571 is good as it doesn't reveal any information. to the caller

Call your service provider and enquire about the telephone preference service, or register here:-

It is free. Takes around 28 days to become effective.

Hope it helps, a now soundly sleeping night worker.
