Here's a couple interesting facts about Vicksburg.

Confederate General John C Pemberton was actually a northern man. And chose July 4 as the day to surrender because "I know my people. I know we can get better terms from them on the fouth of July than on any other day of the year.

After the surrender of the city on July 4, 1863, the fourth of July wouldn't be celebrated for another 81 years.

"General Grant says there was no cheering (after the surrender) by the Federal troops. My recollection is that on our right a hearty cheer was given by one Federal division ' for the gallant defenders of Vicksburg!'"
