Have you followed the fitting instructions carefully? Removed all the plastic tear-offs? Try cleaning the contacts carefully. Does the printer take more than one cartridge, is it in the right slot?

if you refilled your cartridge rather than replaced it with one of the expensive originals, it might give you that message. here's a stock answer from one of the printer companies:

If it's the cartridge it came with and you have checking it is inserted in correct slot, and fully seated, call the manufacturer support line for help.
Could be a faulty cart, or a faulty printer.

NO NOT attempt to do any fix yourself, if manuf are unhelpful, grab your receipt and box and take it back to whence it came. Seller will try to apss you off to manufacturer, but (certainly under UK law) The Seller is the person with whom you have contract, therefore they need to assist you to resolve.
