The paperclip is called 'Clippit' and he is your MS Office Assistant. To get rid of him either Right Click him, then click 'Hide' . If you want to get rid of him completely, Right click him, go to 'Options' and take the tick out of the box that says 'Use Office Assistant'.
If you still want an 'Assistant' but just hate paperclips, you can change it to a Cat, a dog, Merlin, even a Robot. Right click it, go to 'Change Assistant', 'Gallery' and you can choose one you like more. Good luck !!!

Somewhere in the MS Office files is a folder called "ACTORS" this contains these annoying little characters. Simply find the folder and rename it "DEAD ACTORS". No more annoyance, but you can resurrect them if you want.
