Running ON the pitch is not allowed.
A fielding player going for a catch, or to legitimately field a ball can do it, but if he does it while changing fielding position, or while going to talk to another player, it is an offence under the laws of the game.
A batting player has to run away from the main "wicket to wicket" areas of the pitch, unless obstructed by a fielder

Pointing was running on the center of the pitch which is not allowed, this is a violation according to the cricket rules therefore steve bucknor warned him.
Even Michel clarke ran on the pitch and he too was warned for doing that and steve bucknor cancled the one run that clarke had scored.
Running on the center of the pitch is forbidden even for the bowlers.
Both Ponting and clarke had got a warning in yesterday's world cup final.

The pitch is a big deal in cricket. They treat it with kid gloves. So the only thing that is meant to come in contact with it is the ball and the green keepers equipment. Any damage to the pitch can affect the way the ball bounces and provide a great target for the bowlers to aim for to generate unpredictable bounce. So there is a rule not to run on it.
This is a common thing.

Steve Bucknor was just asking Ponting if he could tell Gilchrist to go easy on the Ball as it was getting smashed everywhere.

He was warned by Steve Bucknor for running on the pitch. Only a fielder going for a catch is allowed on the pitch, otherwise no one else is allowed in the wicket-to-wicket area.

If you run over the pitch it could provide a blockage to the batsmen going for another run. It seems to be the flavor of the moment to try to find some reason to accuse the Australians of doing something to cause their winning of then World Cup . Yes there is a reason they are too good for any of those other countries including that one they beat last night .? whats is its name .~~
