Mujahideen is plural for the base word of Mujahid. It is the term used for Muslims fighting in a war or any other struggle and it comes from the Arabic root of J-H-D (known to us as Jihad/Jehad) which means to struggle.
Although the most noted Mujahideen come from Afghanistan, there are a large number of muslim countries who imbrace and support the Mujahideen in their Islamic Jihad (Known to us as Holy war).
The Balkans, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Waziristan, Somalia, Iraq, and Chechnya are also seeing groups identified as Mujahideen in conflict with the non-believer.
Contrary to many beliefs the Mujahideen are not political in nature but claim to be spiritual. They fight against opression and to keep their faith pure in the eyes of the Islamic fundamentalists. To be a Mujahid was considered a great honor but, has become tainted because of western association tying the true Mujahid to terrorism.

It is the resistance organisation in Afghanistan from which the Taliban appeared. In 1979 when Afghanistan was under Soviet rule, the Americans supported, armed and trained the mujaheddin to oppose the Russians and get them out of Afghanistan. This started a war which killed thousands of Russians and Afghans and eventually the Russians pulled out leaving the country in the hands of the Taliban. This was America's way of protecting the 'freedom' of the Afghans. In reality it started a bloody and oppressive regime that fostered terrorism world wide funded in part by the production of opium and heroin which was distributed worldwide. Eventually Afghanistan had to be invaded and controlled by the United nations and is now a bigger mess than it was before America interfered in the first place. The Taliban were, initially, described by America as 'freedom fighters'. Now they are called 'terrorists' and many of them languish in Guantanamo Bay, whilst thousands of others remain free to continue their terrorist activities.

Mujahideen (I fixed the spelling but since the word is transliterated it doesn't matter anyway) is the plural version of the Arabic word for Mujahed. A Mujahed is a person who is waging jihad. Jihad literally means "to struggle." These days it's commonly used to mean holy war but it was originally meant as a struggle to follow God's true path. Today mujahideen would refer to any Muslim in any country affiliated with any group (or not affiliated) who is in a jihad.
