Why was there at least four mini power cuts in Guildford, Surrey last night (28/4/07)?

They happened between 8pm and 11pm but there may have been more later. Where I was the lights went off for about 2 seconds but where some of my friends were, the TV and computer went off for a couple of minutes. The last power cut that I noticed at around 10:30-11pm affected our phone lines.

These power cuts were the result of a secret alien landing in which Elivis and Martha Steward arrived in cognito to preside over secret rites ushering in the Spring Solstice

The effect which you have described matches that of bus-bars being thrown over in a local power station or relay station. This can happen when demand outstrips local supply and more power is then pumped in to the local supply from the National Grid. It can cause the effect[s] which you have described.

In the case of PC shutdown it is important to get an anti-surge power plug. It may not stop shutdown but it will stop damage to or loss of files etc.

Buy some candles today - it could get worse. Be prepared.

only 4 mini power cuts? Lucky you! In the Redhill area we were without all power almost all day (around 10 hours) yesterday! Freezers defrosted, roasts ruined, washing stuck in machines, etc.... No explanation on the recorded phone message when I rang. (Had to charge my mobile in the car as my house phone connects to the power supply too!)

I didn't notice them, give more details like times because all of the things whose clocks normally go wrong when there is a power cut haven't in our house.
