thank u 4 answering my previous questions... i have two more... what happens when the following are added with 0.1 M HCl: iron filings in a test tube and Mg ribbon in a test tube? what type of change do they undergo? how about when added with FeCl3? what type of change do they undergo? thank u very much.

Fe + 2HCl ----> FeCl2 + H2

Same for Mg, but faster.

Fe + 2FeCl3 -----> 3FeCl2

3Mg + 2FeCl3 ----> 2Fe + 3MgCl2

All these reactions are redox.

Well Gervald F is not only faster than me, he knows more than I about chemistry. While I knew the answer for HCl , I would have been wrong about the iron in FeCl3 I would have thought that since the chlorine was already attached to iron nothing would happen. This explains something I've wondered about, I know ferric chloride will attack stainless steel but I couldn't understand why, I guess now I know.

You get H2 gas off as the metals convert to chlorides. the addition of FeCl3 would have little effect since it is already a chloride.
