JNTO has a lot of good tourist information.

I don't know why, but Japanese tourism is not set up for long-range plans. You probably won't find much on airline schedules -- and there are ferries, but most of *that* info is in Japanese.

It really depends on where you want to go.

If you are in college or live near a college, check out International Services and see if they have info. Our college had guide books, cheap student rates for airfare, and lots of info about homestays and other things. There are a lot of good homestay programs that let you stay for a night or visit for an afternoon -- but not such a good idea for a group, I guess.

its difficult to find info in english about japan, especially the smaller areas. do your homework before you go, know what trains you need to get to where you want to go and have everything written down. its easy to navigate around japan as long as you know where to go and if you need to change trains or anything. http://grace.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi will give you all this info, the english link is at the top of the page.

don't expect people to speak much english, if you need to ask for info or anything, keep your english SIMPLE! stick to one or two word sentances and speak slowly. sometimes japanese people can read and understand english but have trouble speaking it, so keep a pen and notebook handy.

restaurants are really easy to access, most will have either photos on the menu or plastic displays in the front window, so you just have to point. remember, if you can't say your numbers in japanese, fingers are just as useful - just point to the item you want and hold up the number of fingers (eg, two beers, point to the pic of beer - or say beer - and hold up two fingers).

On the whole, its a great country to visit, it has some spectacular scenery, culture and festivals.
