The test was done on Norwegian rats that were placed in water and the average rat would last about 10 min. and then drown. One of the rats was saved and was dried off and after a couple of mins., that same rat was placed back in the water and lasted in the water for over 17 hours.

read "Plague Dogs" by the same author that wrote "Watership Down". the big dog is drowned every day in a lab and he develops a desire for survival. The first few pages have him paddling in a vat, slower and slower, until he can't hold his head above the surface. The researchers discuss whether the dog is developing a higher need or instinct for survival or wheter he is just getting better at treading water...it takes the whole book (in my opinion) to show that it is indeed a higher degree of survival development.

If this research is real, I think it is horrible and senseless to put creatures through it for something that has little value other than scientific amusement
