Basically, as long as you stick with Existentialism, Communism/Marxism, Objectivism, nihilism, and secular humanism, you can get a good feel of modern philosophical ideas without being having God keep pestering you. However, I highly suggest that for broadness of knowledge it's worth reading the works of some theological and religious philosophies. Take from it what strikes a chord, and reject the parts that don't work, but don't reject or accept a whole body of work based on particulars. I am personally a Christian, but I've read Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, and many atheistic texts (including Marx's Beyond Good and Evil), and it doesn't hurt to get a good perspective. There are certain aspects of religious philosophies by which one may live without subscribing to the entire religion.

Here are a few names for your consideration.
Ayn Rand
Friedrich Nietzsche
Immanuel Kant
Jean-Paul Sartre
Albert Camus
Simone de Beauvoir
Mary Wollstonecraft
Virginia Woolf-not sure if she was actually atheist, but she does not discuss God in her writings.

Russell and Sartre' come to mind. Russell is English. and was most popular in the 40's and 50's.

Sartre' is French. His most well-known book is "Being and Nothingness". He was most popular in the late 60's and 70's. Give yourself enough time when you decide to read his books! ;)

Ayn Rand, Nietzsche, and Kant also come to mind as I am typing this!

Hope this helps!
