there's only like a 100 Post ROTJ books out there. Start with "Truce at Bakura" it takes place the next day. The rebellion is celebrating its victory when a emergency request for assistance message arrives at Endor. A alien force from outside of the galaxy is invading and a imperial outpost is its first target.
the rebellion sends a small force to help out and its the first sign of truce between the imps and rebels.
after that:
Courtship of Princess Leia: han wants to marry her but she's a princess and a prince wants to marry her too. Han finds information that says he's a prince but can he stop the wedding.
The best (if you want to jump into hard car SW action) would be 5 years after ROTJ:
Heir to the empire: The New Republic is still not totaly in control of the galaxy. Fragments of the empire still control the central core systems. A grand Admirl Thrawn has discovered some secrets burried in time. A ancient jedi master guarding one of the last cloning facilities, and a large aliegence of whats left of the empire.
This is a 3 book series
The (something) fleet: The New Republic is under attack by thrawn and a new clone army. Thrawn plans to use a large powerfull fleet of ships to finish off the republic.
The Final Command: Mara Jade has discovered that Luke killed the emporer (not Vader) and plans to kill him. Meanwhile the republic has discovered the location of the cloning facility and the jedi master and a small army will be sent to destroy it and the master, and prepare for a final battle with Thrawn.
that was the first series that came out all though timeline it was like the 4th series.
after that,,, just pick books. there are tons to read.
there is a new series (dont read it first) called the "New Jedi order" which has lasted like 20+ books andjust recently ended. it deals with Luke rebuilding the jedi order but a whole new threat from the unknown regions invading that the force can not affect.
if you want anymore advise email or message me.

You could check the various p2p networks ... I've found a lot of the EU (Expanded Universe) books on them ... p2p networks are kind of dicey at the moment and I haven't found too many on Limewire ... mostly just RPG manuals. I could email you what I have if you want.
BTW ... there are 63 novels set after ROTJ , more coming, and many comic and short stories also. The guy 2 above my entry has most things right but a little short on facts ... of course to sit here and write everything about the books would take forever ... check out starwars_dockingbay in Yahoo groups ... of course I'm the owner of the group and don't really like to toot my own horn but I will say you will find over 1000 other SW fans there who would be more than willing to help you out.
Also ... no more new movies ... it's about the only thing written in stone by Lucas.

First of all, the books were derived from the movies, NOT the other way around. There were no Star Wars books before the films, so I don't know what you're talking about. Secondly, you have erroneous information. The new Star Wars coming out as rights purchased by Disney, are in NO WAY related to the original 6 "episodes", only on the characters, so the film coming out in 2015 is NOT Episode VII. So, short answer is: NOTHING "happened" since "Return of the Jedi" that's in any way related to the new series of films. So your reference to what happened "in the books, of course", is that there ARE no books. It's not like Harry Potter or LOTR.

There were a lot of novels written about what happens after Return of the Jedi.
Don't expect anymore movies - I think the original cast is too old to play Han Solo, Princess Leia or Luke Skywalker again.

No more 'Star Wars' films, but you never know down the line (even when Lucas 'kicks the bucket')...
There are a lot of novels on what happened after ROTJ, however.
