Although Home Depot has come a long way in terms of customer service (they used to be AWFUL), I stlil prefer Lowes. The staff seems very knowledgable in all departments, as well as friendly and happy to help. I like the layout of the Lowes stores better too. As far as selection, they have pretty much the same thing, though the seasonal stuff seems to be much more extensive at Lowes.

I definitely like the service better at Lowes, but Home Depot in this area has a greater assortment of products. Lowes might carry three of something but Home Depot has ten. But be careful in both, I have found that impulse type items are more expensive at Lowes and Home Depot than the local hardware store. Also both have products made for them specifically, not always as good as the same brands at other stores. And always make sure you buy enough of what you need, we purchased Pergo 6 months ago and know that same color has been discontinued. Luckily we had enough, but we wanted to carry the same flooring into another room.

Personally, I prefer Lowes. The employees are nearly always pleasant and helpful and really know where items are at. A lot of times if you ask for an item, they will take you right to it and help you find exactly what you need. I also like the button you push for help. They usually show up in just a couple of minutes. I am not a patient shopper and when I shop it is usually for a specific item. I am rarely disappointed with Lowes. Plus their selection and knowledge of appliances is as good or better than anywhere else I can think of.

I like Lowes better. First of all they have a coffee pot so I can get a cup of coffee then drink it while i just look around to see all the stuff which is hard to do because they're always stopping and asking to help me with something and they look kinda sad when I say I'm just looking. Then when I buy something they always offer to help me load it in my truck. I always wonder why they seem so nice and happy there. At Home Depot they pretend like they don't see you and never offer to help load you up and if you ask them for help loading they take forever to get someone who throws my stuff in the back of my truck like I throw sticks for my dogs to fetch and they are generally grumpy. No coffee either. Same prices and pretty much the same stuff, it's the people who make the difference. Thats just my local store and it may be different where you live but that's the way it is here.

My husbund is a contractor and prefers HomeDepot as their prices are better and they carry a great assortment of PVC paarts he uses,as well as alot of other things he needs for a job.
I hate Home Depot, and will only shop at Lowes. For home improvement they have the nicest selction. Their stores are very clean, air conditioned, and the customer service is excellent. At Home Depot I always feel like I'm interrupting a social moment when you have to ask an employee for help. They are so blasse about helping, it's more irritating than just hunting things down yourself. In my opinion, Lowes is a much nicer, cleaner, consumer oriented store. I've sworn off to using Home Depot.

I like Lowe's. They carry more American made items than Home Depot does. The folks at Lowes usually are more knowledgeable. Home Depot sells the cheapest generic crap they can get their hands on. Lowe's carries more manufacturer replacement parts. Lowe's, in general, carries better quality items.

It's hit or miss for me at Lowe's. I like Home Depot for most things. They have whatever I'm looking for usually at a better price. Customer Service... ehh.. people are people. I've run into helpful and not so helpful in both.

Where I live Lowes doesn't have the ability to seem to have anything in carpeting or tile, while they do have a better supply for home decorating.
They both have cut back through the years in the "help" departments. You can wander the entire store sometimes and only find young people stocking shelves that have no knowledge of the building trades and "have to find someone to help" this seems to be the current case with both of them.

Lowes the stores are cleaner they have better lighting and wider aisles. The associates are more knowledgable and they tend to stay longer in the position due to better benefits(bonuses, discounts etc.) and working environment. A Lowes employee will walk you through the store and assist you with all your needs were HD employees take care of their dept and send you to another. Woman tend to like Lowes better and its a nice place to meet some DIY chicks.

Lowes..........they are more informed, helpful and courteous.
Everyone that works at Lowe's no matter what department they are in can tell you 'where to find it' in any other department.
