Yes. I have a different kind of broadband. I don't use a modem, I use a radio, a square satellite mounted on my roof. It is made by Motorola. The cable is fiber optic and goes from the radio to a powered signal booster adapter and then to my computer. I leave it plugged in 24/7, and ever since I bought my wireless router, I keep it plugged in there, the router on all the time as well. However, to ensure my computer isn't hacked, even though I have protection, I unplug my USB reciever after I use my computer. Simple as that.

there are different versions of broadband

cable or dsl

cable uses the cable tv signal to tranfer data and dsl uses the phoneline... a dsl modem is needed for this connection which means the phone will not be connected directly to the dsl modem but the phone line will be... I think you mean modem for dial up modem those are two different things
