According to biblical myth, the creation of the earth took six days, and then there was one day of rest. This seven day week was used by all Judeo-Christian cultures, and since this culture dominated the world's concept of time (24 hour days, 12 months in a year, etc) the 7 day week is a standard all over.
Some cultures do not have 7 day weeks. For instance, some cultures in Africa have 3 day weeks, where every 3rd day is a market day.

Seven days go bac kto ancient times when the bible was created. Accordign to some religions God had three days of creating land and planets, etc. and three days of creating life. Then he had a seventh day to rest, making seven days that christians, jews, and all the religions of the old testament relied on to keep track of time, thus most of the population doing this, other religions also did, and eventually the world revolved around a seven day week.

Seven days turns out to be 1/4 of the 28 day lunar cycle.
The French tried imposing a decimalized 10 day week, but it never caught on.

It is because of the bible. God said that on the ten commandments the the sixth day should be of hard work and labor. the seventh day should be a day of rest. And that's where it ends.
