Yikes, never. I can tell you one thing if my husband had ever attempted to spank me he had better make sure that his health insurance covered the extraction of whatever he was spanking me with from HIS rear end.

Yes, I am afraid it was common place in the old days. In the old days, women were regarded much like children. Even today, some marriage vows still contain the word "obey." I am glad that things aren't as bad as back then, but there is still a lot of work to do.
One of my half-sisters said that my father would beat her mother with a belt like one would a child. That was maybe 20 years before my father met my mother.

in a patriarchal society women arent grow-ups, men are,, and the women are seen as children with some extra skills like sewing and baby raiseing ,,in most of the third world they dont school women or let them vote even their sex organs are mutilated as a form of control , so spanking or slapping a woman down wasnt a crime in fact it was seen as humorous like what did she do to deserve a good thrashing from hubbie ,,

yes, I have noticed that too
John Wayne was famous for that... the Quiet Man, for instance.
it was acceptable back then.
male chauvenism was in high demand at the box office because men had full control of Hollywood and men ruled the marketplace because they worked and women stayed home so this was reflected in the movies.

Not only that, but a lot of slapping, etc. Hitting is never an option. If someone makes you that angry, walk away.
