when i used to play baseball, i always had gum. It helps you from getting a dry mouth, especially on a hot day & a long inning. You can not call time out for a water refresher, like in football & basketball.

Chewing gum while playing Baseball can warm you up. Also baseball players used to chew tobacco instead but once that became illegal baseball players found that chewing bubble gum was almost as good, and was safe.

The Mlb has never banned tobacco first off (high school, college and th eminor leagues have banned). Most chew something Gum, seeds, or tobbacco to pass the time and for those who quit chewing tobbacco the idea of nothing in your mouth is wierd. A lip becomes second nature after using it for a while but it does have risk involved. So gum is a safe alternative to chew and helps the quitting process. thats why players chew.

well as far as I know, baseball players in general used to chew tobacco (a long time ago) on the field and now they chew gum since tobacco isn't allowed on the field and they want to set a good example for children. It also keeps there mouths from getting dry.

main reason keeps your mouth moving when you come to hit you want your eyes to be open the whole time and its a proven fact that if your mouth is open you blink a lot less so you always have an eye on the ball

Helps prevent dry mouth -- it can get hot out on the field.
It's free.
Some players may even be obliged through endorsement deals.
And it's traditional.
