Life imprisonment can mean with or without parole. Life without parole means exactly what it says. It is an available sentence in 48 states and more and more Americans prefer it over the death penalty. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole. Americans are learning about the system and we are making up our minds based on facts, not eye for an eye sound bites. (Sources below)

Life in prison costs much less than the death penalty. (Many people, including some people who answered your question don't seem aware of this.) Sources below.

Another person thinks that the death penalty is a deterrent. This is incorrect. No reputable study shows that it is. In fact, states (and nations) with the death penalty have higher murder rates than states without it.

In some societies (notably among some Native American) banishment is used as a punishment. This can mean permanent banishment or temporary to an isolated island with emphasis on re education.

I did a big project on the death penalty, and I still don't know which side I'm on. I'm leaning towards the against side though. Good: -person can't ever commit another crime -"eye for an eye" -possibly a deterrent (but there's no proof) Bad: -innocents can be executed -hypocritical -let out easy compared to the crimes they commit -unfair (racism, bias, arbitrariness) An alternate solution: Life time in jail without parole or until too old/frail/sick to do any real harm.

As an abtract answer, how about solutions to stopping people from commiting those henious crimes that sudenly constitute a death sentence.

Stuff like changes to the criminal justice system outlining more psychological help for those individuals who seem at risk for commiting violent crimes. Giving people life in prison doesn't scare psychopathes from murder, and quite frankly, neither will public hangings of others. If you look at the countries with the lowest crime rates (Sweden, Denmark, etc)
those are the same countries who attack crime at the roots of it ( before it actually happens) with halfway houses and a greater emphasis on rehabilitation.

I'm sure a maturely written paragraph about that would impress your teacher way more than the same 3 things everyone else in the class is gonna say.

1) Life Imprisonment
2) Life Impisonment with no chance of bail forever
3) Deportation to original country of birth, or if born in that country, being sent to some island where there is no justice and torture is allowed ( like Gitmo except for people actually CONVICTED)

Here's my alternate solutions:

10 years inside a reactor core
10 years of marriage to Rosie O'Donnell
10 years of Air America reruns

or...

Running through Mecca wearing a Star of David on your back.

I'd favor abolishing the death penalty, if (and only if) life in prison really meant LIFE. None of this Life, but eligible for parole in ten years crap. You don't get out except in an urn or a zippered bag. No letters from home, no visits, no cable TV in your cells, no Taco Tuesdays in the prison mess..

Who will pay for life imprisonment.

That is why the death penalty still exist.

Prisoners need to work to pay for their accommodations.
That does not mean back to the old abusive chain gang styles, but with rules and a reward, discipline combination.

You want to have TVs weights outside privileges you must work.

1)Make them dress up as drag queens and put them out on display.2) Make them clean our roads and parks just like the chain gangs used to do. 3) Make them build roads, prisons, gov't bldgs, etc. 4)Strap them down in parking lots and use them for speed bumps it would be enviromentally friendly.

As long as they are locked up and we have to pay enormous amounts of money either to kill them or keep them locked up they should have to do something to pay that back, or at the very least some entertainment value

Death match on pay per view. Two death row inmates fight it out, the winner gets life in prison.

It would pay for their stay.
