Go to Knitting Pattern Central's website. They have links to everything you want to know about knitting there... from learn how videos and instructions on how to make different stitches to 1000's of free patterns. There is also a sister site called Crochet Pattern Central. These two sites are the most helpful sites on the .www for crocheters and knitters. Here are the links to both...
Knitting Pattern Central...

If you are wanting to learn how to crochet or knit and can't figure out how to do it from the "how to" instructions online try seeing if one of your friends or a relative can show you how. If that is not an option try going to a local Michael's or Ben Franklin's and seeing if they have any classes you could register for. You can self teach with books and online help but having someone show you is a lot easier and faster...

Hmmm, I see you have many answers for knit, but none for crochet yet so I'll try to provide you with some helpful links:
1. anniesattic.com has free video clips you can watch on your PC ... just keep playing them over & over until you grasp how to create a particular stitch.
2. www.crochet.org has information on left/righted crochet; plus a great chart for figuring out turning chains.
3. www.eachoneteachtwo.com has some great material too.
For beginner patterns you can search the Internet. I have some free patterns on my website written in fairly easy language (a mix of abbreviations & long-hand). For magazines, I'd recommend checking out the new one called "Crochet Today"
I hope this helps.

Like the other Dutch person, my mother taught me, but I have found this site in English rather helpful in explaining knitting. It takes some navigating now, but there are good pictures for about all you might even need to learn about knitting.
Even if you find an other site as first teacher this is certainly one to keep for back-up help site:
http://knitting.about.com/
For crochet I like:
