the landlord should take care of this situation there are a number of mold and it could be black mold which is very dangerous. since you did not specify if it was on tile or if it was on the drywall im not sure how to answer, if it is on the tile then the clorox pen is really good it will clean the grout, if it is on the drywall then you will need to wipe it down with clorox bleach, or you may even have to replace the piece of drywall, if it is a small section i would do that, if you have a leak of course you will have to find out where that is and fix that but if it has been going on for a while and it is behind the wall and in the stud this is what you have to do

you will need to remove all the drywall, fix all the leaks(if any)
check to see if there is mold inside the wall and the studs
clean with bleach the effected area with a bleach solution (this is supposed to kill it) make sure you clean everything even pipes that may be running behing the wall, then take a basic white paint and paint (this is supposed to prevent it from coming back if the bleach does not kill all of it) over the effected area of the stud after that drys take a large plastic bag or maybe the plastic that you use to cover the floor when you paint and wrap and secure with duct tape(this keeps it from spreading if the bleach and paint are not effectely applied). then replace the drywall finish and paint

you didn't say where in the bathroom the mold is growing, that would help us give you a better answer, unless it's on all the walls. mold needs warm moist air to grow, if the bathroom has an exhaust fan, you need to use it always! or open the window, leave the door open, some way to keep the air flowing. now to kill the mold, wash the walls with a mix of 10% bleach, to a gallon of water. you might have to up that if the mold is not killed after you use it, then try 20%. TSP is a strong soap for cleaning walls before painting, when the mold is taken care of, use TSP and hot water and wash the walls from the bottom and work you way up to the top. if you don't do it this way, the soap running down the walls will leave streaks in the paint. set a fan up while you do both of these projects so you have lots of fresh air while working. and do not mix bleach with ammonia or products containing it, it could kill you with the fumes. after you have cleaned the walls, let them dry for a week, keep using the fan to keep the bathroom dry, and to help it dry out completely during the week. during the week, you can fix any cracks or holes and do any caulking that needs to be done. come the weekend, i would suggest that you use a stain blocking oil based primer to seal the walls, and prep them for whatever type of finish paint you want to use. they do make paint just for bathrooms and kitchens, that will stand up to washing and cleaning. i would suggest this type, and when you buy it, have them mix in a packet of the stuff they sell to kill mold, it can go in any paint. you can even have it put in the primer, and use it in the trim paint too. this is what we did in our bathroom remodel, and we haven't had any mold come back, and it's been 8 or 9 years now. good luck, hope it works our for you.

Does your bathroom have an exhaust fan, they are usually located on the ceiling, if not, ask your landlord to have one installed, this will help to move the moisture out of the room. When ever you take a bath or shower, this causes moisture to accumulate on the walls and the ceiling, its important to get this moisture out of the room, if you have a window, open it a crack or leave the bathroom door open if you can. As far a getting rid of te mold, bleach works well. mix it with water 1/2 and 1/2. wipe it clean with a sponge, beware of the odors it produces, where a mask. If the mold has gotten deep into the wall, you can't get rid ofit unless you replace part of the wall. There is a product on the market that you mix with paint and this will help to reduce mold, check your home center, If you have a fan now, turn it on, when your in the room, leave it on for about 20 minutes after your done. Good luck!

First: explain this to the landlord. Then ask if he'll give you a break if you clean and paint it yourself as it's dangerous, some black mold can cause serious diseases.
Get some air in the bath, use the fan or leave the door open when using the shower or, after to air it out, open a window if only a crack.

Wash the walls good first, then go over them with a bleach solution or use Lysol to kill the mold and bacteria.
Use a fungus or mold paint from Home Depot, explain this problem to them. Good luck.

Do the bleach component as reported, then repaint the wall with mold prevention paint. Works a manage. and also you're proper about the coldest wall - its in all likelihood the coldest wall contained in the completed homestead - attempt conserving the window open a crack each and each of the time.

howdy, painter here. yes, mold can be very dangerous, but i don't believe you need to freak out. most of the time mold grows on the outside film of paint in bathrooms. your fan does indeed need to be used to prevent this. id clean every wall with bleach, (maybe 50/50) use gloves! then wash the walls with plain water and dry them off. then i'd prime the walls. when you buy the paint, ask them to put mildewcide in it. it will help the problem to not happen again. (food for thought, don't paint your bathroom a dark color, it will 'bleed' color on you)
good luck and enjoy your new place!

First off if there is a fan in the bathroom make sure you use it if working, also, be careful because you don't really know what is lurking. If you have children in the house or you all of the sudden start having allergies, get that mold checked out. You might have to move...anywyas, Tilex works really well.

Pour some bleach in a spraying container and spray away. I works great.Check back in 20 mins and you will be amazed. Remember to wear protective gear to protect your membranes. If the mold is on a dry wall, move out immediately! Good luck!

A regular spray bottle, some chlorine bleach (80%) and water (20%) will do, ventilate well and wipe any orange or colored mold. Do this a couple of times and allow to dry thoroughly prior to painting. Now go pick a cheery color!
