Clearly the egg - each genetic mutation which evolved the chicken more and more into what we recognize today happened as the egg was fertilized.

That depends on your belief in the creation of the world.
If you're a creationist, then God created the chicken.
If you're not, then neither came first, as what we know as a chicken evolved from a single cell that was neither a chicken nor an egg.

Eggs.
Birds evolved from dinosaurs. Dinosaurs from Reptiles.
If you go back hundreds of millions of years from a chicken, its ancestors were laying eggs.
