I've just watched, again, Inconvenient Truth. Regardless of the programs main message I was reminded of the electoral botch which occurred.

I have to ask guidance from U.S. contributors to try and understand why there are so many different methods of voting in the U.S. elecetions.

That muck up that seemed to occur with the 'chits' and different or obscure holes being punched really makes me question how the supposed greatest democracy in the world could rely on such dodgy methods of voting.

Is any thing happening to improve the validity of the voters decision or does it rely on each electoral area to come up with their own 'best way' of doing things?

I'd be interested in hearing genuine comment and not just being told that I'm a left wing liberal etc.

I would think many would like to know what's going on.

Direct voting is good for the US Politics and not the electoral college system because majority vote must determine the head of state and not the representatives of the states.

I think all states have stopped using the punch-card ballots, the ones which caused so much chaos in Florida. No system for voting and counting votes is or will be perfect. There will always be mistakes.

It is important to point out the simple reason for the electoral college. The United States is a union of individual states. It is a political, economic, military, and diplomatic union of fifty states and several territories. The voice of the people is the House of Representatives, those that are elected based on population. The voice of the states is the Senate, each state gets two Senators regardless of population. The President, our chief executive, is chosen by the states to represent the interests of all the states. There is no direct election for President because the executive branch is not meant to be the voice of the people but rather the voice of the union (nation).
