The Product of Two Similar Binomials
If the corresponding terms of two binomials are similar, the binomials may be called similar.
You can multiply these in your head without having to copy them onto paper by using the FOIL method.
FOIL stands for: First...Outer...Inner...Last
Let's look at this problem: (5x-2)(x+3)
1)......( 5x - 2 ) ( x + 3 )....multiply first terms......(5x)(x) = 5x^2
2)......( 5x - 2 ) ( x + 3 )....multiply outer terms....(5x)(3) = 15x
3)......( 5x - 2 ) ( x + 3 )....multiply inner terms....(-2x)(x) = -2x
4)......( 5x - 2 ) ( x + 3 )....multiply last terms.......(-2)(3) = -6
Thus: 5x^2 + (15x - 2x) - 6
.........5x^2 + 13x - 6
Good Luck

5x * x = 5x^2
5x * 3 = 15x
-2 * x = -2x
-2 * 3 = -6
=5x^2 + 15x - 2x - 6
= 5x^2 + 13x - 6

In general, (a+b)(c+d) = ac + ad + bc + bd
So in this case:
5x^2 + 15x - 2x - 6 = 5x^2 + 13x - 6
Just a little practice and you can do it in your sleep

(5x-2)(x+3)
= (5x - 2)(x) + (5x - 2)(3)....... distributivity
= (x)(5x - 2) + (3)(5x - 2)........ commutitivity
= (x)(5x) + (x)(-2) + (3)(5x) + (3)(-2) ...... distributivity
= (5x)(x) + (-2)(x) + (3)(5x) + (3)(-2)........ commutitivity
= (5x)(x) + (-2)(x) + (15)(x) + (3)(-2)...... associativity
= (5x)(x) + (-2 + 15)(x) + (3)(-2)....distributivity
= 5x² + x -6...associativity and arithmetic.
Some of the steps can be combined, but I spit them up so you could see each one.
