Interesting point. I never thought of it before, and I have visited the Lincoln Memorial several times. I'm not sure there was a reason other than the sculptor decided to do it that way. Plus, he was a very tall man and may have looked awkward if his statue were standing rather than sitting.

He got really tired of standing while the sculptor worked, so he sat down and the rest is history!
