It depends on the laws of the state where you are transporting the gun.
In Texas, you would have to have a concealed weapons permit to carry a handgun in a backpack on your motorcycle. It a gun is within "easy reach" then you are considered to be carrying it. In at least one instance, a Texas court ruled that a handgun, in a locked case that was located in a bag on the floorboard of the back seat of a car was readily accessible to the driver. If they will make that ruling, then they would certainly be likely to determine that a motorcycle rider's backpack was easily accessible.
There is also a clause for "traveling" in Texas that allows carrying a gun in a car without a concealed carry permit (and would probably apply to motorcycles as well) but the definition of "traveling" is murky and is open to a wide variety of interpretation.

Like the previous poster stated...it depends on the jurisdiction you're in. If you're planning to travel cross country...you're going to be making a large number of phone call... ;)
Incidentally...in many jurisdictions you need a permit to transport the weapon, and it still needs to be transported in a proper manner (with a trigger lock, and ammo seperate).

Need to check with your state police, each state is different.
Some state you can carry a gun along as it's in plain sight, other needs a weapon permit.

I was told, in Alabama, it was ok so long as I didn't wear the packback on my person. I had to hook it onto my seatback. They said a saddlebag was even better. Also you can't have bullets in the same container.
